1. Welcome new members – Introductions

New members to the Library Advisory Committee were welcomed and all members and faculty present were introduced.

2. Budget

It was reported that permanent dollars were added to the Collections budget, since carry-over money is not available anymore. There is an annual inflation in journal
costs, plus a 21% increase to UpToDate.

3. Change to Journal Access

Access to electronic resources off-campus has been streamlined to a single proxy through University Libraries’ “GetIt!” – Penn State Access ID/password is required for
authentication; this is linked to the ILLiad interlibrary loan system and auto-populates the request form. This went into effect on September 5.

A scoped journals list will be maintained on the Harrell HSL website. The CAT (Libraries Catalog) needs to be consulted to search for print resources .

4. Harrell HSL website redesign and migration

The Harrell HSL website is being re-designed and will migrate to the platform used by University Libraries. Tentative go-live date is December 2013.

5. Harrell HSL Facilities Renovation Plan – overview

A copy of the Facility Plan is shared with members. A process has begun to look at library space needs and re-imagining possibilities on how space can and should be used. Potential
partnerships with IT, CTSI, Medical Education, etc. are being considered in this process.

6. Recruiting

A level 3 IT Consultant will be recruited to support collaboration with University Libraries, the integration and maintenance of disparate library systems, and serve as a bridge between the Harrell HSL, Hershey IT, University Libraries IT and Penn State IT; establish best practices for mining data related to library value; track trends, and identify new applications and technologies relevant to the library environment.

7. EBM education reach and impact

Education Librarian Nancy Adams provided and informational presentation on the increase of students reached by the Library through collaboration efforts in integrating library instruction in the EBM curriculum.

8. Discussion

There was a question regarding PSU membership in ORCHD.

The concept of 3-D Printing was raised and Cynthia brought up the idea of a “Tech Sandbox” that would be explored as part of the space re-design.

One member inquired about the availability of full-text access within EndNote.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 am
